Since the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Europe, many European countries have imposed travel restrictions. Italy as one of Europe’s most visited countries, has had 31506 cumulative confirmed cases and became the most severely affected country in Europe. Many countries have imposed restrictions on travel to and from Italy, Britain is no exception. Although not far from the Easter holiday, many people who had booked the air tickets to Italy, still be told to cancel their travel plan due to this serious situation.

Vincent Wood, a British traveller from Sheffield who has travelled 51 countries, had planned to travel to Italy for the Easter holiday in February. However, He was notified the information of the flight two weeks ago that the flight will be suspended and the ticket will be forcibly cancelled. He said the cancellation of this travel plan is not a bad thing. He believes that firstly, ensuring his own health is not only responsible for himself but also for the health of his family. Secondly, he can spend more time with his family. If possible, Vincent may travel with his family in places with fewer confirmed cases in the UK.

According to the GOV.UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to Italy, due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and in line with various controls and restrictions imposed by the Italian authorities. British nationals in Italy should follow the advice of the Italian authorities. Most airlines have now ceased direct flights between Italy and the UK. Alitalia continues to reduce flights.(Published 17th March)
Only one airport in each region of Italy will remain open. Roma Ciampino closed commercial flights on March 13. Rome Fiumicino Airport Terminal 1 also closed on March 17. Other airports, including Milan Linate, will also be closed in the coming days. Train companies are reducing services for domestic and international travel. Some cross-border bus companies have also cancelled their services.
In the current situation, the UK government advise against unnecessary travel planning. We hope that people can also consciously obey and take responsibility for the health of themselves and their families. If you come back from Italy, please follow the NHS steps to isolate yourself. If you have severe symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, contact the NHS at 111.
